Lenses were imaged over a stage micrometer to assess any opacity or other defects. Normal lenses were clear and showed sharp micrometer lines across the central portion of the lens (A). Lenses with opacity were blind scored as mild cataract or severe cataract (B and C). Some lenses had a distinct anterior defect (D) that was observable through the cornea before lens removal (E). Some lenses had internal fractures (F). The age and genotype of each example lens is indicated.
